Overview: The Otto G. Richter Library has established a Digital Library Fellows program that seeks to expand the quality and range of scholarly content on the Internet by awarding grants that assist faculty in the development of digital resources.

The Richter Library will provide work space, funding, and extensive technological support to faculty for the creation and online delivery of scholarly content that can be used by researchers throughout the world. The Library is seeking projects that will have a significant impact on the teaching, learning, and research of a particular discipline.

Projects must result in digital resources not previously available in an online format and must involve resources that are either held uniquely at UM, that have been created at UM, or by members of the UM community. In order for the Richter Library to provide long-term access to the materials created through the project, technical aspects of the project must fit within the UM Digital Library infrastructure and standards.

Eligibility: The competition is open to faculty that constitute the Richter Library's primary service community and who hold full-time appointments at the University of Miami.

Intellectual Property: A fundamental eligibility requirement is that the participant has the right to publish the digital materials. In practice, this means that the participant must own the copyright or have secured permission from the copyright holder in order to publish the materials on the Internet.

Funding: Up to three awards will be provided with a maximum of $15,000 for one year. The earliest project start date is June 1, 2004. Later start dates are possible but all projects must be completed by May 31, 2005.

Project Selection Criteria: Selected projects will result in the creation of scholarly, Internet-based digital resources that meet the following criteria:

  • Represents a new and innovative type of resource or provides access to a traditional resource in new ways;
  • Generates different types of uses than would be possible through a printed resource;
  • Demonstrates the applicant’s ability to successfully complete the project.

Proposal Format: The proposal must include the following elements:

  • A one paragraph abstract of the proposal
  • A narrative describing the proposal (no more than three pages)
  • CV of the applicant
  • Budget
  • Letters of support from applicant’s departmental Chair and Dean

The narrative should describe how the digital material created through the project would be used in teaching and research, as well as identifying existing digital research materials relevant to the project. The narrative also should suggest ways that the digital resource would benefit the teaching and research of other scholars. Projects that make use of digital images, audio, and video are particularly encouraged and the narrative should specify the quantity of material to be utilized and whether this material needs to be converted into digital format or if the material will originate in digital form.

Proposals should be submitted by March 31, 2004 to:

Review Procedures: A committee of faculty, administrators, and librarians will review each proposal and select the proposals that best meet the aims of the Digital Library Fellows program.

Award Criteria: Recipients will be expected to share their experiences with other faculty through a forum sponsored by the Library, as well as producing a final written report. Recipients of the fellowships should acknowledge the Richter Library in any publications, printed materials, or web sites that result from the grant.

Recipients are expected to work closely with the Richter Library in developing a detailed timetable and plan of work in order to ensure successful completion of the project.
