1.
Introduction
This
report covers the fifth six-month period of the IMLS
National Leadership Grant #LL-90160, awarded to the University
of Miami for the Digitization and Preservation of Selected
Afro-Cuban & Cuban Exile Collections. This project is
being carried out in conjunction with IMLS Directed Grant
#CL-00006 for the Cuban Heritage Collections Digitizing
Project under the rubric Cuban Heritage Digital Collection
(CHDC).
2.
Personnel
Project
personnel have not changed. María R. Estorino continues
to serve as the Project Director/Archivist. Pedro A.
Figueredo is the Project Manager, and Alejandra A. Valencia
and Eugenio A. Alonso continue to be employed as research
assistants.
3.
Content
Of
the 13 collections being digitized as part of the Cuban
Heritage Digital Collection, four collections fall under
this grant. In the reporting period, the Cuba: Capitanía
General Collection was digitized and its finding aid
was delivered on the CHDC Web site. Its availability
was announced on several academic listservs and to a
selected list of approximately 75 scholars and librarians
specializing in Cuban or Latin American studies.
Processing,
digitization, and delivery of the Polita Grau de Agüero
Collection and the Lydia Cabrera Collection were rescheduled
until the summer of 2002. Other collections have been
digitized during this reporting period and are described
in the report for IMLS Directed Grant #CL-00006.
From
the CHDC Web site, users can access each collection via
two sections: "Collections" and "Finding Aids." "Collections" provides
links to descriptions of and highlights from each collection
being digitized, while the "Finding Aids" section offers
an alphabetical list of all the finding aids available
on the site. Users of the University of Miami Otto G.
Richter Library OPAC will find catalog records for each
digitized collection that link to the finding aids on
the CHDC Web site.
4.
Technology
We
continue to use a Microsoft Access database to manage
this project. The database contains fields for descriptive
as well as administrative metadata. From this database
we are able to create reports that facilitate the preparation
and encoding of finding aids.
5.
Publicity
In
February 2002, a press release was sent via e-mail to
several academic listservs and approximately 75 Cuba
or Latin America scholars announcing the online availability
of the Cuba: Capitanía Collection.
