A
Disappearing River at San Antonio de los Baños, [between
1900 and 1920]
1 photograph
Note: Notation on verso: "A Disappearing River at
San Antonio de los Baños . . . Once made the old town
famous as a bathing resort takes a plunge into a black
cavern and disappears from sight. It is needless to
say that the bathing was done at a respectful distance
from this dark abyss. To keep the unwary traveller
from stepping off the brink, a neat stone wall has
been erected. San Antonio is one of the most interesting
of the old inland towns and the tourist will do well
to make it a visit if only to see this freak of nature.
Some sixty miles South a small stream makes its appearance
from a rocky hillside said to be at least a part of
this river but this has not been proven."

Most of them equal in antiquity the California Missions
of which so much has been written and these old buildings
have in many cases fully as interesting features and
histories. This church faces a pretty park full of
flowers and shrubbery and at the time our picture
was made school was being conducted inside. This was
the real Cuban variety where each student studies
aloud at the top of their voices making a veritable
bedlam to stronger ears." Stamp (mark) on verso: "Munson
