| Scope
and Content Note |
The
Manuel R. Bustamente Photograph Collection consists primarily
of hundreds of black and white photographs of Cuba from the
early 1900s to the 1930s. There are several photographs dating
from the 1950s and 1960s, and a few color snapshots from
the 1990s. The bulk of photographs are found in Series II
and III.
Series II: Havana, n.d., 1900s-1999 (bulk dates 1910s-1930s)
contains photographs of the city of Havana and includes various
aspects of the life, architecture, and culture of that capital
city. Series III: Cities and Towns, n.d., 1900s-1990 (bulk
dates 1900s-1920s) is arranged in alphabetical order and
contains photographs of various towns and cities throughout
the island
of Cuba. The Manuel R. Bustamante Papers in Series V consist
of materials donated by Mr. Bustamante related to his personal
works and educational experiences, including photographs
and memorabilia of the Universidad Social Católica San Juan
Bautista de la Salle in Havana (Sub-Series A). |

Series I: Subject Files, n.d., 1890s-1990s

Arrangement: Alphabetical
Extent: 16 folders (Box 1)
In
Series I are photographs of Cuba without specific geographic
identifiers and organized into different subject categories
such as agriculture, ships and boats, animals, citrus industry,
and others. There are many landscape photographs of Cuba
in this series in folder 8, as well as a portrait of Charles
Edward Magoon, provisional governor of the Republic of
Cuba, 1906-1909 (folder 15).
Series II: Havana, n.d., 1900s-1999 (bulk dates 1910s-1930s)
Arrangement: Alphabetical
Extent: 38 folders (Boxes 1-2)
The
Havana series features photographs of the capital of Cuba.
Series II is organized into subject categories and arranged
in alphabetical order. Photographs of the various forts
of Havana figure prominently in this series, as do photos
of various street scenes.
Series III: Cities and Towns, n.d., 1900s-1990 (bulk dates
1900s-1920s)
Arrangement: Alphabetical
Extent: 54 folders (Boxes 2-3)
Series
III features images of various cities and towns throughout
Cuba (for photos of Havana, see Series II). Of special
interest are photographs of La Gloria, a town established
by American settlers post-1898. There are also many photographs
of Camagüey and its churches as well as Santiago de Cuba.
Series IV: Provinces, n.d., 1906-1920s
Arrangement: Alphabetical
Extent: Nine folders (Box 3)
In
this series are photographs of scenes from the six original
Cuban provinces but that are not identified as being of
a particular city or town. Images include views of the
Yumurí Valley and Bellamar Caves in Matanzas province as
well as of the Vento Aquifer in Havana province, which
to this day provides about half of Havana's potable water.
Series V: Manuel R. Bustamante Papers, n.d., 1929-1999 (bulk
dates 1957-1958)

Extent: 13 folders (Box 4)
The
Manuel R. Bustamante Papers consist of materials donated
by Mr. Bustamante that represent various aspects of his
personal life including works and educational experiences.
Of special interest are materials related to the Universidad
Social Católica San Juan Bautista de la Salle in Sub-Series
A as well as other materials regarding Catholicism in Cuba.
