Federico
Fernández Cavada was as Lieutenant Colonel of the
Union Army during the U.S. Civil War. Serving as U.S.
Consul in Trinidad, Cuba, Federico resigned this post
in 1869 to join the Cuban insurrection that became
Cuba's Ten Years War (1868-1878). He commanded the
District of Trinidad as its General, later becoming
the Commander-in-Chief of the Cinco Villas and later
all Cuban insurgent forces. Federico Fernández Cavada
was executed by the Spanish in 1871.
