While his brothers Federico and Adolfo took up arms to support the Cuban cause, Emilio Fernández Cavada rallied support for the independence efforts from Philadelphia. He was an active fundraiser and information relay from his brothers to exiled strategists. His son Emilio was a doctor and Lieutenant Colonel in the Cuban army during the island’s War of Independence (1895-1898).
