General
Valeriano Weyler's Edict of
October 21, 1896
In
an effort to separate rebel forces from civilians and suppress
the popular support of insurgents, Spanish General Valeriano
Weyler (1838-1930) ordered the relocation of all Cubans living
in the country or outside fortified areas into "reconcentration
camps" in towns and cities occupied by Spanish troops.
These camps were not adequately provided for and subsequently
became breeding grounds for diseases and hunger, leading to
the deaths of thousands of Cubans. |
