Address
of General Gerardo Machado, President Elect
of Cuba, Delivered at the dinner tendered
to him by The New York Citizen's Committee,
Hotel Astor, New York: April 22, 1925
In
1925, Gerardo Machado went to New York on
an American tour as president. There he
delivered a speech praising the American
people in the person of President Coolidge
and emphasizing the ties that bound Cuba
and the U.S. He noted that the geographic
proximity of the island nation to American
soil made it an ideal supplier of sugar
as well as provided it a steady and solid
ally near its shores. Machado reassured
his audience of Cuban admiration and sympathy
for the U.S. and closed his speech remembering
American contributions to the independence
of Cuba from Spain.
